World Bee Day May 20th

Today is World Bee Day!! πŸŒ»πŸπŸ’“

How World Bee Day got started:

Since 1947, the US human population has increased by 128% however, the total US managed honey bee population has decreased by 54%. This rate of loss being experienced is unsustainable for our nation’s food security. In the 1950s, pesticide use in farms became widespread to increase yield. This is the beginning of the decline we’re seeing today.

Some ways to help:

  • Stop using harmful chemical pesticides that kill bees.
  • Call for safe swarm rescue and relocation by your local beekeepers’ association.
  • Plant a bee-friendly garden
  • Consider becoming a beekeeper. Contact your local beekeeper’s association for more information.

One of the best ways to attract bees to visit your garden is by growing flowers rich in pollen and nectar – perennial plants are great, but don’t discount flowering annuals, shrubs and trees, too. Learn more here:
